My Case for Joel Embiid Going #1

Bill Russell, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson.

These are names that will come up in the same sentence when you're talking about what kind of NBA player Kansas big-man Joel Embiid could one day become.

A native of Cameroon, Africa, Embiid started playing basketball around the age of 16 at one of Luc Richard Mbah a Moute's basketball camps. This is a stark contrast to the other 59 players who will have their name called during the 2014 NBA Draft later in June due to the fact that most kids start playing basketball when they are roughly 6-years-old, but not Joel Embiid.

Despite the late start to his promising basketball career, the 7 footer flourished in high school averaging 13 points 9.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocks while helping guide his team to a Florida state championship. Embiid was a consensus 5 star recruit, and he elected to attend college at the University of Kansas alongside high school phenom and future top 5 pick Andrew Wiggins.

At Kansas, Embiid averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and shot 62.6% from the floor while being named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American.

The knock to this point on Joel Embiid has been the concern of injury. A knee and back injury plagued the star freshman's lone season in Lawrence, Kansas. One cannot help but think of a similar player who was also dubbed a 'Once in a Decade' type of big-man: Greg Oden. Oden, as you probably recall, was selected ahead of the 2013-2014 MVP Kevin Durant.

This year's draft is similar to that 2007 draft in that there is not only one prolifically talented swingman, but two. Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker.

I rank Wiggins as the best player in this years draft, and here's why: Jabari Parker is the surest bet out of the top 3 players in this years draft. Joel Embiid has both the highest ceiling and lowest floor of the three; in other words, Embiid could just as easily be the worst of the three as he could be the best. Andrew Wiggins fits somewhere right in the middle. His ceiling is higher than Parker's and lower than Embiid's, and his floor is higher than Embiid's but lower than Parker's.

Now, you may be asking yourself, then why not just take Wiggins and hope he can reach that ceiling, and worst case scenario he is a fringe started/key roll player on a good team? Or, why not just take Parker? He's a guaranteed 16 point-per-game scorer who will undoubtedly make multiple all-star teams during his career.

Well Cleveland, you've put yourself in a spot where you have no choice but to take the guy with the most potential. Your current star, Kyrie Irving, has already expressed his distaste for Cleveland and his willingness to take less money to get out of there when his contract expires. Joel Embiid is a guy who will come in and not take shots away from guys like Kyrie and Dion Waiters. He will get his points off of offensive rebounds and garbage buckets, unlike Parker and Wiggins who need to have scoring opportunities within the flow of the offense.

Also, while it maybe a long shot, you leave the small forward position open for Lebron James who can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2014-2015 season. How enticing would it be for King James to see a proven, all-star level point guard and a center coming off of a solid rookie season? Very tempting, if you ask me.

While it may be a safer pick to go with Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins, the pick that could bring you unprecedented riches is Joel Embiid.
